Kevin Egan Mr. Bridge and Mrs. Bridge are my favorite fictional couple. In two novels, written nine years apart, Evan S. Connell examines their lives first from Mrs. Bridge’s point of view and then from Mr. Bridge’s point of view. The effect is not a Rashomon-style exercise of depicting the same events as experienced by two different people. Instead, we see their marriage and their lives in an upper-middle class suburb of Kansas City in the years between the two world wars through each of their eyes. The implicit question throughout both novels is whether these two people love each other. The answer, apparent at the end of Mr. Bridge’s story, is yes.
Kevin Egan I work at inspiration, usually by asking “what if” questions. Over the course of many years, I have published science fiction, literary short stories, and golf mystery novels. My current writing interest (over the last five years) have been novels and short stories suggested by my day job at the New York County Courthouse (the courthouse that appears in the opening credits of Law & Order). Unlike the show, my ideas are not “ripped from the headlines.” Instead, I think of a standard courthouse situation and then ask myself, “What if this happened instead?” Candidly, not every question leads to a brilliant idea. But most times, the question generates an idea with enough traction that I can work into a story.
Kevin Egan I am currently working on a novel tentatively titled A Small Circle, which is the third in a series of legal thrillers set largely in the New York County Courthouse in lower Manhattan. I also always have several short stories in various stages of completion.
Kevin Egan In my mind, the best thing is the feeling I get when I have been working an idea for awhile and the story suddenly clicks. It gives me the illusion that I know what I’m doing.
