Off the top of my head: Andy Weir. Between The Egg and The Martian, his stories just completely blew my mind. They're incredibly smart and fun, and I still find my mind drifting back to them at the most random times. And, he began as a self-published author! I am in awe. Thanks for the question!

The laptop was dead, and I hadn't backed up my files. With a wave of horrified nausea, I crumpled to the floor, unable to process the loss—years of my work, my dreams... now gone forever.

AHH! I hate even imagining this. 😱😭 Please, everyone remember to back up your work!

And by summer, we mean the year-round reading list right?? On the top of my 2023 TBR at the moment:
Sweep of the Heart by Ilona Andrews
World Departed by Sarah Lyons Fleming,
The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston,
Defend the Dawn by Brigid Kemmerer,
A Daughter of the Trolls by McKenzie Catron
The Maiden Ship by Micheline Ryckman
A Curse of Hope and Shadows by Katherine Macdonald
...And the list goes on. So many books, so little time! Thank the skies for audiobooks.

Oh my gosh. I want to go travel to Ilona Andrews' Innkeeper Chronicles, become an innkeeper, and live in a pseudo-magical inter-galactic inn. PLEASE.

The outline for the sequel to Into the Churn. 👀 I may never write it (it depends on how launch goes), but it's still so much fun to work on! These characters are so close to my heart, it would be a complete dream to flesh out their second adventure. Fingers crossed we can get the word out about the Into the Churn this spring and greenlight the sequel! 🤞

I love designing the characters visually, dream-casting them as my favorite actors, and also coming up with playlists that capture the vibe of my story. The real struggle comes when I want to write all my story ideas at once!

My inspiration for Into the Churn evolved and changed *a lot* during my outlining process and even the first draft. Ultimately though, the core was still inspired by the intensity of my time as a collegiate athlete and ultramarathoner.

Find a writing buddy (or three) and enjoy the journey. Writing can be a long and winding path, so those two things can make all the difference. Begin, Learn, Persevere... and have fun!

For me, writer's block is often caused by a story problem I don't know how solve. So I make a playlist for the work in progress, brainstorm with my critique partners, and hit the gym. After a couple days, the answer usually pops up, and the writer's block disappears!

Once, I was in the car when we ran over what I thought was a gray plastic bag half-rolling, half-floating across the road. It instantly gave us (and two other cars) a flat tire. Seemed to have disappeared by the time we pulled over, and to this day, I have no idea what it was.
Unidentified rolling object. Fingers crossed it was a Transformer.
