When I find that I can't write, I take myself out of my environment. Sometimes a walk will do it. Other times, a road trip. And, often (as silly as it sounds) as a mystery writer, I watch old BBC / British murder mysteries to see what ideas might be "re-tooled" in a different way.

Trust your own voice. As Ann Beattie once said: "only write what only you can write." Also, watch people and listen to them. I love making notes in cafes - the best people watching around. And, when you write - make sure you're not distracted by reading someone else's work. And, of course - the only real advice: to be a writer, you must write -- every day.
