I wrote a story about a wacky experience planning a 40th birthday getaway to the Caribbean for my wife–it was a comical disaster– People who read it thought it would be a good book. They also loved the stories I told about my Mom, Ida Kagan (a cross between George Costanza's mom and Joan Rivers on steroids. And that all led me to the idea of starting with a book of personal essays about my childhood.

When I was in the 3rd grade, I had to write a story about the neighborhood where I lived. My mom worked with me to write about what dogs are saying to each other when they were barking around the neighborhood. From then on, I've been an evolving !nkling.

NEVER stop writing. Same time every day. Not less than an hour.,
NEVER hate your writing...it is molding clay that comes to life from within your mind and and expresses through your hands.
NEVER take another person's opinion of your writing as 100% viable. Everyone has an opinion. Ask people you know and trust to tell you what's working best and build on that. You are your most important audience.

Discovering another universe where you can escape and "be" instead of "do" as is the case in our A.D.D. (Always Doing Doing) culture. It also is cathartic and healing and in my case is the best drug for treating my depression and anxiety issues.

I set a time for not less than 2 hours to write each day at the same time. I make it like a doctor's appointment (we wouldn't miss one of those). After doing that for am month it becomes a habit...a good one. If it's not a ritual, it cannot become a habit, and then you'll fall into the "I'll do it when I find, get, discover, have the time." There is no such thing!
