Keep a notebook of ideas, observations, phrases and sentences that come into your head unbidden. Cut photos, images, snippets etc from magazines and put them in an envelope or file. All of these things may spark a story, or an idea for a factual piece. Alongside this just write, even if you have no immediate market in mind.

Too many interesting locations come to mind. However, an interesting one might be China Mieville's 'The City and the City'. I wonder how I would cope with all that unseeing!

'The Clouds Dance' came about after hearing a government minister suggest that Art and Music should no longer be taught in school due to the need for more scientists and doctors etc. Omitting these subjects from the curriculum would leave room for more teaching of Science and Maths. The minister said art and music could be after school activities. I assumed these would have to be paid for, meaning that only the better off families would be able to afford that. I could see that Literature might also be earmarked for removal - after all if you want to control a population then removing imaginative and creative subjects has often been seen as a way to do that. Many book burnings have taken place in the past. Novels such as 'Fahrenheit 451' and '1984' along with world events at the time also inspired the plot. Since writing the novel, other events have happened which resonate with my ideas.
