I'm a research scientist and I was doing what research scientists do and looking at some journal papers and I came across one about the flora on the Somme, and the reconstructed landscape after trauma. I was fascinated about this idea of how nature reacted to such a terrible event. I wanted to talk about the symbolism of flowers - we know the poppy, but as this was an Easter themed story - I turned to the Easter lily as a symbol instead - it means hope.
