Ulysses Press was looking for a writer for the project, a mutual friend introduced me to photographer Dawn Sakamoto Paiva, and we decided to run with it. I'd been spending some time at the local library leafing through community cookbooks and cookbooks political candidates used to mail out to constituents here in Hawai'i in the 80s that my mom passed onto me. Some of the best recipes are in those books. I also have cookbooks that belonged to my grandmother, a treasure trove of family food history.

Reading inspires me every day. I love to read cookbooks, essays about life experience, and pages and pages of fiction. Movies also inspire me to write.

I use lists because they're easy to generate and because I can cross items off and feel a sense of accomplishment. Or if I'm feeling really stuck I just take a break from writing and do something else: wash dishes, start a load of laundry, call a friend.
