Paul Starobin Make writing a habit-- your 'muscle memory'--try to write every day something that you feel can stand up, even if it is only a post on social media or a jotting in a notebook. And, read, read read--keep your pores open!
Paul Starobin Hmm. So many good choices! Dickens' London for one, 'Fog everywhere...' But I think I will go with Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' Russia, the Napoleonic Wars unfolding. I love Russian literature, I lived and worked in Russia as a foreign correspondent, and that would be a wonderful time travel. Paul Starobin My last book was set on the eve of the Civil War. I thought it would be interesting to follow with a book set in the Gilded Age that followed, and I liked the idea of a story about a gold rush. Where there is gold you will find adventure, comradeship, ingenuity, backbreaking work, greed, envy and the criminal impulse in all sorts of mischief-making schemes--in other words, you will find human beings, in all their humanness.
