"The Cruise Ship Lost My Daughter" was inspired by a British Isles cruise I took my mother and stepfather on in August 2017. Unlike the book, there were no abductions (phew!), but I did draw from many of our experiences, including the attentive service we received from the cruise-ship staff, the frequently cold and wet August weather, and the heated competition between the Hop/On, Hop/Off bus tours in Dublin (though I changed the colors of the bus services to protect the innocent...). Oh, and my parents did frequently forget or misplace their key cards, maybe even more so than in the book. We had a good laugh over that.
It was a fantastic and entertaining cruise. My stepfather was of Welsh and English ancestry and always wanted to visit the area. Sadly, he passed away less than five months after our return. Although we miss him dearly, I’m grateful I was able to experience the trip with him before he left us. We had a wonderful time.
