Decide if you really want to make the commitment to the art (with its ups and downs). Don't expect to make a lot of money. Or become famous. Do it if you are more unhappy/unsettled/insane when you don't. And if you want some security, get a day job that is not too taxing, is in another field, and has strict hours with no take-home work. I'd like to say I have followed my own advice, at least on the latter, but--sadly--no.

I take my dog for a walk, or I exercise. Then I read. And if I'm really stuck, I do this writing exercise: Take out your journal or a piece of paper. Open a book, any book, close your eyes. Point to something on the page and open your eyes. If the word is a verb, adjective, or noun, write 3 pages about it. Don't edit yourself. Any genre, any style. If it's a pronoun, try again. This usually gets the juices flowing.
