If I can give aspiring writers one piece of advice, it's tenacity. This is a marathon, not a sprint. It took me 20 years, double-digit manuscripts (not counting the ones I started but didn't finish!), and about 200 rejections before selling my first book. Believe in your work and your words. Find friends in the writing community, whether it's online or in person (or both!). If you need to take a break, take a break. If the ideas and voices in your head never go away, you'll come back to them when the time is right.

The rivalry between the US and Canadian Women's National Ice Hockey teams runs deep. Games where they face one another for the gold medal, particularly at the Olympics, are always exciting (and nerve-wracking as a fan). I thought it'd be a fun enemies to lovers story to have national team rivals become teammates in the pro women's league.
I was also inspired by real-life couples with cross-border romances. Several former members of the US and Canadian national teams are married. Watching those games must be nerve-wracking for them!
Unexpected Goals features Canadian goalie Maisy Goode and American goal scorer Jen Donato. They had a controversial run-in at the last Olympics that people are talking about. They pretend like they're over it, but the sparks fly when Jen joins the Boston Ice. Then they get to know one another, and the sparks fly for a different reason. ;)
