Cassandra Jules Corrigan I have a problem with getting stuck on all the little bits that connect one scene to the next while being too focused on random little tidbits that don't advance your plot at all. I used to beat myself up about this, but I've found that sometimes, if you can write those random scenes that don't advance the plot, it clears your head and makes it easier to write the things that DO advance the plot
Cassandra Jules Corrigan The best writing advice I ever received was from children's book author Michael Shoulders. He challenged a group of young writers, myself included, to think of five steps to getting published. We came up with:
1. Write
2. Edit
3. Rewrite
4. Reedit
5. Send to publisher
Michael Shoulders then told us that we were all categorically wrong. The real 5 steps are:
1. Read
2. Read
3. Read
4. Write
5. Send
It seems counterintuitive, but I really believe he was onto something. The biggest thing you can do to become a successful writer is to read other peoples' work and learn from it.
Cassandra Jules Corrigan Lots of things! My primary work right now is a queer-friendly fantasy series meant for adults, but I'm constantly jumping between projects and thinking of new ideas.
Cassandra Jules Corrigan The Pronoun Book came about when an adult in my life told me I shouldn't teach children pronouns because it would just confuse them. I disagreed, because I felt like the best time to teach about pronouns is when kids are young and still have an open mind and lots of neuroplasticity. So, I started thinking of how I would explain pronouns in the simplest way possible, and started writing it down. And ta-da! The Pronoun Book was born.
Cassandra Jules Corrigan I think it would be cool to go to Middle Earth and kick it with Legolas and Gimli
