J.A. Rove Having a job outside of fiction writing, and three kids of top of that, I don't really have time for writer's block. Rather, I have too many ideas and not enough time to get them down on paper.
J.A. Rove I'm not sure I'd consider myself a writer. I mean I write and I publish. But that somehow seems secondary to me. I prefer to think of writers as entertainers, or if applied to things like science, as teachers. What's the best thing about that? I suppose seeing your ideas take shape, the feeling of knowing someone was influenced by what you've written. That feels good.
J.A. Rove Write. Write. And write some more. I think a lot of people over think the process. Though, that may depend on what exactly you're writing. I'm a scientist and writing research articles is vastly different than writing children's books or books for a non-scientific audience. At the same time, you'll never have a product of any kind if you don't write.
J.A. Rove I'm currently writing another children's book with my two older kids. As the son of a cognitive scientist my six year old son was asking me ridiculous questions like where he goes when he closes his eyes! I decided to try to explore the topic in a book. We wrote the first draft freely, without editing, in about an hour. I'm reluctant to alter it too much as it has a very raw and realistic feel to it.
J.A. Rove I'm not sure to be honest. Some days ideas just pour out and others it's a struggle to even re-read already written sections. New ideas certainly get me excited and usually lead to a writing spree. Finishing is more the problem for me.
J.A. Rove I got the idea from a little girl at my son's kindergarten. She seemed to assume, that because she was cute, everyone would want to play with her.
