Terrye Turpin I'm reading The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James. It's a blend of murder mystery and ghost story with a strong female protagonist. I love a scary book with a puzzle in the plot. I just finished The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert and I need to get the second book in her series. How did you like The Practice?
Terrye Turpin I'm currently working on my first novel, a paranormal mystery. Writing a longer work is a big shift from short stories. I have to tell myself I'm in it for the long run, and not get discouraged when I can't finish the book in a week!
Terrye Turpin Write anytime you can, and don't worry about whether it's any good. Take all the writing classes you can, and find a tribe of writers who will both lift you up and give you constructive feedback. Give as much as you get, support other artists.
Terrye Turpin Every time I put words on the page and share them with readers, I feel I've earned myself a little bit of immortality. It's a joy when someone tells me they've enjoyed my stories.
Terrye Turpin The best remedy I've found for writer's block is to just give yourself permission to write something crappy. Don't worry about whether anyone will like what you write and just crank it out. I use writing prompts at least once a week, and when I write for the fun of it I never have a problem with coming up with words. They won't be the best thing I've ever written, but at least I get something on the page, and many times I find inspiration to come back to and finish a story.
Terrye Turpin My first thought was Hogwarts, but I'm reconsidering because it might be too dangerous. I read and write mostly horror, so I'd have to be careful where I visit. I suppose the world of Midnight, Texas in the novel Day Shift by Charlaine Harris would be a safer bet. I'd visit the pawnshop there and the cafe for some home cooking. I live in Texas, so I think I'd fit in too, even though I don't have any magical talents!
Terrye Turpin My book club is currently reading The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich. I've also started listening to the audio book version of Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell.
I'm working on my first novel, a paranormal mystery, so I'm doing a little research in the genre and reading through Charlaine Harris's series set in Midnight, Texas. I'm on book two - Day Shift and really enjoying it.
