Far, far too many.

Some of it, yes! Other parts were difficult to continue coming back to after every review, but I knew it was important to share.

I went on a lot of walks and recorded myself telling a story (as if a friend was walking next to me). I really wanted the book to read as if you and I were sitting down for coffee and I was just putting all these stories and memories out there. Hearing myself tell the story was important to find the right tone, especially since I think I monitored my tone more when I was on the keyboard.

Power in their own story. For a long time, I felt like I needed to keep my vulnerabilities locked up inside. Opening up about them on the trail was, for me, remarkably freeing.

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to share my story with a broader audience. I found a lot of power and strength in myself and my story while writing and putting it all down on the page. I hope that these stories help my readers find strength in their stories as well.

I always tried to make sure I had good books lying around to inspire me. Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery to get the juices flowing, so I would write outside or on the balcony. Other times I would allow myself to just "be," I'd watch a movie that inspires me or even a TED talk that got me thinking. I also listened to books on tape while taking a drive or going for a walk. Long phone conversations with good friends helped me remember a lot of stories, and their input was crucial especially when I needed a different perspective.

Reading! I tried to read many different memoirs to get a taste for how others shared their stories. I also took a lot of walks with my dog, Truman, and recorded my thoughts on my phone as I let my mind wander. By the time I made it back to my desk, I had a lot of ideas I wanted to flesh out.
