There are a lot of mysteries in my life. Such as who keeps poisoning the trees in our front yard? Our whatever happened to dear little Gary who killed the kittens fifty odd years ago... But the biggest mystery in my life was, I think, who was my mother's stalker that year Dad was away on business? And what might he have done, had he gotten away with it? That mystery formed the basis for my first crime book The Night Whistler.

I start another story. Or if I'm really blocked, I work on someone else's, as their editor. I'm lucky enough to be able to do that in my day job (as a script editor)

Set time to write at least 5 days a week, even if it's only half an hour a day - but stick to the same time, and make it a habit. My second piece of advice, is one I got from Michael Robotham: your main task as a writer is to: Make. Them. Care.

I'm currently working on the first draft of the third book in The Night Whistler (Mick Goodenough) series, now set 5 years after the first book (in 1972). The second book, The Carnival is Over will be published by Text in August 2022.

I have to write most days, or I get antsy. It's been a habit of mine since I was a screenwriter for a living. I love to write, and the day doesn't feel complete unless I do.

it came from a discarded screenplay I'd written fifteen years ago, which was calling from the bottom drawer. And the idea for that came from the true story my mother told me, about the year in the 1960s when she fought off the nocturnal phone caller and stalker she had when my father was away on business for weeks on end.
