Kent Haruf used to say that before he would write, he would read Faulkner so he would remember good writing. I reread sections of books I adore. Sections from Something Wicked This Way Comes or a battle scene from Conan. These things remind me what might be. They set a bar I will never reach, but I will try.

Goodness...I love writing something unexpected. Being surprised by my own writing. I've written whole chapters that were not planned and just sat back and wondered where it came from.

I write. I totally change the topic and start writing. I am not writing for publication. I am writing to exercise my mind and to not get in the habit of not writing.
