D.A. Robb That's a hard one... There's the pride, I suppose. I mean, it sounds cool, doesn't it? I guess I would say the best part is being your own boss. There's a freedom to it that is so satisfying it should be illegal.
D.A. Robb Write. Every day. Even just a little - but write because it's your passion. Write for the thrill of telling a story. Write because you're driven by the love of the game - not the rewards. It's a sad fact that most writers will never achieve the success they dream of, but if you can finish and put something out there and get a handful of good reviews then you will feel a sense of accomplishment that is hard to rival.
D.A. Robb I move on. If a story has you stumped, set it aside. Write something else. Anything else. Come back to it later with fresh eyes and the story will reveal itself.
D.A. Robb It all starts with an image, like a snapshot, in my head. Often it's the last scene of the story and I work backwards from there. Sometimes I like to simply pick three main elements and conjure a story up using them as a basis, you'd be surprised at how well that works.
D.A. Robb We were driving through horrendous rain right up in the Scottish Highlands (waaay up past where civilisation ends!). It was pitch black. I was in the backseat, grumpy because our camping trip was such a washout. To kill the time, I decided to write (what I intended to be) a short story. I asked my friend to give me a character, a location, and a threat. She said, old woman, picking mushrooms in a forest, a big pig... The rest is history.
D.A. Robb Right now I'm working on a two-story novella that I intend to expand into a series of quick reads for people on the move. The only connecting theme is that they will give you nightmares!
D.A. Robb For sale: Brand new baby carriage, cot bed, and pile of newborn clothes. Never used.
