Fiona Thomas Stop waiting for the perfect time, the perfect idea... just start writing because nothing you ever write is wasted. It's all good practice and helps build up your ability as a writer.

If you don't know what to write about just start recording your days in a journal. Make a note of how you feel, what happened that day, who you bumped into, any funny, notable moments. All this stuff is so valuable because you can go back through your notes later and make connections, find themes, create fictional characters based on your own experience.
Fiona Thomas I'm writing a very ropey first draft of a novel, something that I never thought I'd be brave enough to attempt! I've set myself small, achievable goals like 600 words a day which has really helped. I'm all about writing in small, focused bursts of energy.
Fiona Thomas Being able to communicate my sense of the world in a way that feels most natural to me.

I've never felt confident speaking up in conversation or sharing my opinion with a group. Writing has always felt like a safe space for me, it gives me time to articulate what I really mean, to truly say things as I see them and that is incredibly valuable to me. It allows me to feel seen and help others feel that too.
Fiona Thomas It depends on what I'm writing. If I'm on a deadline I just keep on writing, even when the words that come out feel wrong, when they feel like they'll be scrapped, because I know when I come back to them with fresh eyes in a day or two I'll be able to do something with them. You can't edit a blank page.

If I'm at the ideas stage, I try to look outside of my usual world, listen to different podcasts, read articles on new topics, I just try to open my mind to new ideas and allow the spark to (hopefully!) catch on.
