Gojan - Just finished Ashes In Venice and loved it ! Posted my review on Goodreads and Amazon. Hope you approve. You woke up some dead brain cells when you mentioned Haystack Calhoun. Big time wrestling on Saturday afternoons. Here’s some trivia for you. What was Fritz Von Eric’s signature move ?

I dug deep into my shallow head and couldn't remember Von Erich's wrestling move...so I cheated and looked it up. "The Claw," of course! Haystack was always one of my favorites from the old days. It struck me a few days ago that the plight of the gophers ( finding a permanent home ) is the same plight of Chief White Halfoat’s family in Catch 22. I remember this passage from Heller’s book because when I first read it 50+ years ago that it was both terrifying and hilarious for the end to be when you’re followed from in front. I identified completely. Do you ?

Ha! I have not thought of The Chief since I read Catch-22, also 50 years ago. Yep, the little gophers have a similar problem: everywhere they live is a good place to build pricey houses, hotels and golf courses...so they're constantly on the run, usually with deadly results. There are other parallels in Heller's great book. Absurdity always reveals its secrets.
