Patrick Mullane Obviously, the idea for my memoir came from an interesting life lived! That said, I also saw an opportunity. Very few books are written about a love between a father and son. And even fewer are written from the perspective of a son who is the child of an astronaut. These two unique angles made me think hat people would find interest in my story. And because it is an uplifting story, it's a departure from many memoirs which feature anguish, heartache, and dysfunction. There is certainly a need for such works, but reading a feel-good story every now and then is something I think we can all use.
Patrick Mullane I get inspired to write in the same way so many others do - by reading a great work. Often, in fact, it's reading that kicks me in the rear and plops me down in front of my computer to type away.
Patrick Mullane I'm currently working on a novel that is complete but which I'm editing. It is a significant departure from my memoir as it's a young adult novel.
Patrick Mullane Two things that are said by many others: write on a regular schedule and re-read and re-write over and over again.
Patrick Mullane I love the feedback from readers about a story I've told that made them laugh or touched them in some way. While I have yet to publish fiction, I have a few completed manuscripts and find great joy in creating people out of thin air. After letting a work sit for a while, I'm always shocked at how much I don't remember about those people I created, but when I begin reading, I feel like I'm getting acquainted with an old friend.
Patrick Mullane Just write. Anything. No word put to paper is wasted, even if not used.
Patrick Mullane Tough one. For reasons I can't explain, it might be the world where the rabbits lived in "Watershed Down." I loved the book as a kid and loved the characters. Need to read it again!
Patrick Mullane Currently reading "Falling to Earth" about Apollo astronaut Al Worden. Great story so far. Recently read some novelizations of Shakespeare, Malcom Gladwell's "Talking to Strangers," and "Say Nothing" a great book about the "troubles" in Northern Ireland.
