My beloved college writing professor hammered into our heads, "Writers write." Problem is, I found, the first 100,000 words or so won't be any good. You've got to get that slush out somehow—journals, articles, blog posts, bad drafts—so you can get to the good stuff you were made to create. The more you write, the better your words become. So my best advice is to get writing!

Exploring. Reading. Asking questions. Listening to other people's life stories. And driving—definitely driving. In fact, now that I think about it, most of my story structure and at least one song came to me on long stretches of country roads.

Right now I'm wrapping up the second and (at this point) final book in the Nedé Rising duology. A Brutal Justice delivers more romance, more twists, more luscious scenery, and leaves no question unanswered. I cannot wait for it to hit shelves! (And, thankfully, we won’t have to wait long.) While I adore A Gentle Tyranny, I’ve saved the proverbial best for last. As for other projects, I’m currently developing another project based on this series, which has been a lot of fun. I can’t share much now, but you can get updates by subscribing to my newsletter at JessCorban.com or any of the social media handles listed on my website.

Hearing from readers that your words have changed the way they see the world or themselves. Close second: Being able to excuse travel as "book research." ;-)

I'd swim right into Adrienne Young's Fable, sailing the Narrows aboard the Marigold. I can't say I'd be a dredger, though. I'd probably be up in the sails with Willa. I've always had a soft spot for adventure on the high seas, ever since reading The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi in middle school.

A Gentle Tyranny began with a question. I was feeling the weight of what seemed to be an endless string of worldwide news stories reporting heinous crimes against women, and in a quiet moment wondered, What if we could do something about it? Before I finished showering, the concept of the series was born.
The characters and setting were fleshed out as time went on. While I was deliberating over the location, I took a family trip to Belize. I’ve loved Central America since studying there in college, but traveling through the lush jungle and unique features again, I knew exactly where Nedé belonged.
