I think that everything about life is potentially a mystery if we only know how to ask the right questions. But to answer further: I believe that the greatest mysteries in literature are the characters we create. Understanding them is, to me, the most intriguing puzzle in everything I write.

That's a very complicated question because there are several reasons. Most important is my love of creating. Pushing against the stubborn wall of facts as a professional historian, I wished to explore fantasy and imagination: to get inside characters, rather than observe them from the distance of objectivity.
