Write about what you know, know the location of your story, read a lot, have a conflict/plot resolution. That is all good advice, but putting together the elements of who, where, what, when needs to be learned.
Writing clubs are good for this, but I prefer online schools staffed by published authors who will give you a written critique chapter by chapter.

I knew I had a talent for writing when I recounted my college English professor giving my short story submission a failing grade. He said my writing was too professional and accused me of copying a TV story.
After I retired, I kept in good physical shape with workouts. But I wanted to slow down the process of getting old. I needed a daily project that provided mental stimulation. For me, writing a novel filled the bill. I am now working on my second novel, another thriller.

I got the idea for False Flag: One hundred years of deception from Joseph Pulitzer’s private comment, “Nobody outside a lunatic asylum believed Spain had sunk the Maine.” Yet, in competition with William Hearse for circulation of their newspapers, Pulitzer blamed Spain. Their “Yellow Journalism” was the first press-driven war (Spanish American War).
