Jemima Price I am lucky in that I don't get writer's block. But i do find it hard to make myself sit down and write. I am a real procrastinator and will avoid sitting down, which is strange as when I do, I am in my element and can't stop writing!
I also think about where my story will go at other times when my head is clearer such as when I go for a run or am in the park with my children. This means when I sit down to write I am raring to go with the next step of the my story!
Jemima Price Cliche but true - just do it. Set aside a period of the day where you work well and give yourself a short burst of time to just write.
Don't worry about perfection - that can come later. I always say to my students, filling the page is the hard bit; you can change how it's written later.
Allow the story to be organic and let it grow. I love it when characters move in directions that I didn't expect. The love interest in Finding Ruby didn't even start out as the love interest! I just grew to fall in love with him myself!
Jemima Price I am currently working on a new novel entitled Diaries of a Hot Dad's Wife. This grew from observations of life as a 40 year old mum and wife and also from the weird idiosyncrasies of living in a small village!
Jemima Price Often when I am running, ideas come to me about where my story should go. Then when I get home, I completely forget what it was that I had thought of! I am going to record my ideas next time while I am running. Maybe it's the exercise endorphins rushing to my brain!
Jemima Price I got the idea while on a round-the-world trip when I was younger. I wanted to record my amazing experiences and I met people on the way who had such wonderful stories. One day I met someone who had had a similar experience to Ruby and I thought, I wonder what it would be like to suddenly find yourself travelling alone in the deepest depths of SE Asia? And the story grew from there!
