Tom McLaughlin What do I have against "A is for Apple" books?
And what's up with "... for boys?"
- "A = Apple" is as unimaginative as it gets for kids. Instead, "Alex the alligator is an amazing astronaut" will grab a preschooler's attention. Not only does it teach letter sounds, but it also engages preschoolers' imaginations. And it gives moms and dads something fun and interactive to discuss.
- By using boys names for each alphabet character, I'm hoping to engage boys in learning. The book also has a special page to add THEIR name -- if it wasn't mentioned. Many studies indicate boys lag behind girls' reading skills. So I'm hoping this creative "boys name" strategy engages boys in learning the alphabet. ** Read it to your preschooler and let me know your results.**
Tom McLaughlin Take a trip to the library or a bookstore. Jump online to research a different place, time, moment in history -- do something that visually sweeps you away.
But then, ping your brain with the topic / character / challenge you need to solve, and maybe the two will connect creatively.
Tom McLaughlin ABCs and 123s for Girls ... and Pete the Pirate.
