June Powers Carefully review what I am trying to say, and then sit quietly with some music and let the words come. (Sometimes chocolate helps.)
June Powers The best thing is the words themselves and putting them together in such a way that when you read them to someone, they really get what you are saying and they are as excited as you are - that is magic.
June Powers I see a lot of work where the initial idea was excellent but the person did not fully develope the poem or story to make the work "blown away" interesting-
push; take it to the next level. Ask, what else can I do for this character or verse. Ask, will the readers easily understand what I am saying. Ask, is there power, softness or richness behind the words. Ask, do the words sing.
June Powers I am spending a large amount of time on social media right now to promote my books. CHILD will eventually be a collection so I am revising poems for the collection and I am preparing to write short stories based on the caregiving industry.
June Powers I am in a very good flow right now. I live in an idea state and have to carry a pen and paper with me all the time in case something comes up. I am very lucky. I find medition helpful. I love art and photography as well so, investigating other art forms always inspires me. Watching an interesting film, reading something with a global point of view, YouTube, hiking in the desert, and research. I love research. Sometimes just stopping, being quiet and having a moment admiring a sunset, will do the trick.
June Powers I am very concerned with this idea that we have a tendency to think of each other as separate from one another: neighbor to neighbor, city to city, nationally and globally. I wanted to call attention to situations that can happen to anyone, and very often our reactions to these events are quite similar - person to person, no matter where we are from. I am also quite concerned about the misinformation around food, hunger, and the treatment/protection of children. I was not quite sure how to put these concepts together until attending a set of wonderful seminars sponsored by The Center for the Study of Race and Democracy through ASU in Phoenix, AZ, last year. The information was explosive - absolutely on fire. I continued the research on my own and decided the time is now for this conversation. As I began writing, the book began to take the point of view of, or consideration for a child in each topic I was exploring. I had certain subjects that I definitely wanted to cover. When this was accomplished, what stood out in each poem was a dual message: for example the fact that child brides still exist and, the emotion behind that and what it must feel like at 11 years old. At this point I changed the name of the book from SPIRIT SALE to CHILD. Everything was in place. This book of poetry is NOT a children's book. It is a book of awareness.
