E.J. Beaton Hi Jenna, thank you for the thoughtful question. I wasn’t inspired by any particular text or model, but I was interested in creating a world where female characters weren’t constrained by patriarchal rules and expectations. I liked the possibilities that this freed up for narrative roles for female characters.

As I wrote, I came to realise how many different elements suggest patriarchy – it wasn’t just about the obvious things, like the jobs that women could have in this world, but the subtler markers. For example, I thought about language: terms and titles, the order of words (eg. “women and men”), language that could connote discrimination or contempt without conveying sexism, and much more.
