Benny Mailman It took me over 6 years to get it from journals to computer to published. Putting out my best was very important to me. And actually, through miscommunication, my first paperback came out before I edited some tiny errors. I was able to edit them in the hardcover and epub, which will be coming in the next few weeks.
I lived my book, and have a great memory, so writers block did not present itself often. Write something!
Benny Mailman Seriously, I Love the process. The writing is awesome, and often difficult, but I push forward. If I got caught up on a sentence, or how to convey my thoughts in an awesome way, I just moved on, knowing I would get to it in the editing with a fresh mind.
I ADMIT I LOVE EDITING! The magic happens in the editing. There were seriously major items I added, that were hilarious, in the 25th edit! Give it time, let it marinate.
Benny Mailman Write! I always used to think I needed the right place, the right desk, something magical to move my hand. I do believe when it is ready to come out, it will. I personally wrote as if the reader were with me on the journey. Making them laugh and poking fun at myself.
AND! You are either writing or you are editing. Do not do both, editing kills the creative muses needed to get the idea on paper or computer. When I came back to edit after writing for 3 months, some of my writing was awful! But it was there. I also, having written the entire book first, know what I needed to foreshadow, as well as what not to reveal to early. It is a more organic way to bring it alive, in my opinion.
Benny Mailman Because this is a series, I am working on the polishing of Book 2. I still do not have a secondary title for it. Finding 42, yes, but not what follows. Book 1 Cut the Rope, Book 2, still thinking. Book 3 will be after that.
Benny Mailman For this particular book/series it was as if it had to be written. When I went through and edited, over 30 times, I often shook my head and wondered "Where did that come from?". Obviously I knew it was me, but it seemed so well crafted, as if an outer spirit or energy was helping me.
I am a morning writer. I would get up, drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee, put on my buddy Randy Olinger's music, and go. I usually have a solid 3 hours in me. I have never, ever forced any artistic aspect of this book. If it did not flow, I would stop and wait for that energy to return.
Benny Mailman The recent and book, Finding 42, is based on a big journey I ventured out on in October of 2012. I am one of those people who seeks adventure, and crazy happenings always seem to find me.
