Everyday life, mostly. I’ll see someone on the street and wonder who they are and what their life is like, maybe, wonder what made them get a face tattoo or dye their hair magenta. I’ll witness an awkward interaction and think about alternate realities where there could have been chemistry instead.
When I was a little girl, I’d lie awake at night and imagine stories where I was a (wildly attractive, usually badass) heroine on some great adventure that involved a dashing alpha. I’d toss and turn and curse until I was so anxious about losing the idea, I’d get out of bed to write it down. Now...NOTHING HAS CHANGED. The stories and characters are still there, keeping me awake. But I’ve learned to take my midnight companions and combine them with my sidewalk observations to breathe life into my characters. Inspiration, for me, is a practiced skill; one I’m getting better at.

I don’t get writer’s block. When the ideas aren’t flowing I just write really shitty literature and throw it away later. The trick is to never fall out of your writing routine.

I was walking to the gym in downtown LA at 5am and saw a girl (who would later become Ivy) getting dropped off from a night out. She looked so happy that, for one small moment, I thought, ‘That girl could only have fallen in love tonight’.

Ask yourself this question: If I never “made” it as a writer, would I still write? I’m not a successful writer (yet) and may never be. But I would write every day anyway. You have to love the process and be prepared to fail royally.
