Mark Lowes FERAL SNOW came from the prospect of me becoming a dad. My partner wanted to have children desperately, but I always had reservations about my abilities and my preparedness. FERAL SNOW is about a man who's about to become a father and instead of being there, he runs away to the Arctic. While in the Arctic, he falls into a chasm and is alone until a child falls in with him. The whole story's about accepting the responsibilities of fatherhood.
Mark Lowes I usually don't get writer's block (I know, sorry). This is because I'm halfway between a panstster and a plotter. I plan the first Act of my novel, write up until that point, then force myself to plot the next Act before continuing, and then so on until the final Act. This allows a structure but also flexibility. AND I know my characters by then so I can base the upcoming decisions on their personalities, etc.

Also, I've written another novel, which I'm letting sit for a while before editing. In the meantime, I'm writing a dystopian thriller about a young girl's mission to travel the length of the UK during a 'The Last of Us' type apocalypse with a small boy.
Mark Lowes Being giving license to just sit and think. We're constantly on the go nowadays and are expected to do stuff. Being a writer allows me to sit there and consider a scenario or problem and the best way to get that down on paper.
Mark Lowes Don't be afraid. It's a terrifying journey. When you share your writing with people or tell them you're a writer and they have that look of, 'Really?' or laugh, then that's not encouraging. But keep going. It gets better.
Mark Lowes Definitely The Devil in the Dark Water by Stuart Turton. His debut, Seven (and a Half in the US) Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle was genius.
Also, I'm currently reading The Deep by Alma Katsu and have just finished the sequel to Bird Box, Malorie, by Josh Malerman. Brilliant.
