By recent, I assume you mean most-recent-released...I'd just written five scifi romance novels where the males speak as if they swallowed dictionaries. I wanted to write a character with sass. Along came Callie. I wrote a chapter where she's on the docks at night, and it flowed from there.

We're lucky to have technology. No sticky typewriters and correction tape. Use a good word processing program, there are free apps to help improve your use of adverbs, passive voice, readability. And start the hunt for your critique group, fellow writers who will not forsake you, and give honest constructive advice.
