When inspiration sparks and your fingers fly over the keyboard.

My mother can see ghosts, and she would tell us about them: one old lady reading over my grandmother's shoulder or a ghost horse trotting along the passage or being levitated off the bed by a ghost with red eyes.

By recent, I assume you mean most-recent-released...I'd just written five scifi romance novels where the males speak as if they swallowed dictionaries. I wanted to write a character with sass. Along came Callie. I wrote a chapter where she's on the docks at night, and it flowed from there.
My last finished full-length novel was a scifi mystery - Blade Runner meets Dick Tracy.

We're lucky to have technology. No sticky typewriters and correction tape. Use a good word processing program, there are free apps to help improve your use of adverbs, passive voice, readability. And start the hunt for your critique group, fellow writers who will not forsake you, and give honest constructive advice.

I push through it. You can't edit what you haven't written. What helps is signing up for Nanowrimo. During the year you can upload editing/writing projects and the website holds you accountable for daily wordcount.

I wrote a historical fantasy spanning eight centuries. I'd love to take the journey Zemin did (via junket, horse, on foot, caravan, ship) from Hangzhou to Calcutta to Kathmandu to Pokhara to Kanhpur to Samarqand/Tabriz, Persia to Basra to Dabal to Muscat, Oman to Yemen to Aden to the western coast crossing past Perim Island to Fagal. Across the Red Sea to Lalibela to Mersa Fatma to Ain Sokhna to Cairo to Port Said to Constantinople (Turkey-Istanbul) to Rome crossing the Adriatic Sea from Durres to Bari to Fiumicino to St. Peter Port, Guernsey
