I've read many Pride & Prejudice variations, but few take place outside of England. After my second trip to Italy in the summer of 2019 I wondered, "What would happen if Darcy spent months surrounded by the warm and friendly Italian people?" Mind you, there's no way that the Thomas Bennet of P&P canon could afford to take his wife and daughters on a Grand Tour, so Elizabeth's backstory needed to change. I've seen her portrayed as a bluestocking before, but not as an American (to Darcy's Brit), so that was a fun wrinkle to add to the core idea.
