I have a few strategies. Walking is my favorite go-to for working out problems and for thinking about my story in a way that makes me want to write. Sometimes, it helps to work on a side project for a day or two.

Most of what didn’t make it into the book were scenes that didn’t move the story forward, but the funniest cut came courtesy of my editor, Joyce Lamb, who gave me the note, “It’s enough to just tell us she barfed and Cass is holding her hair.” So, I cut my three paragraphs of puking down to a sentence or two. It’s probably better for it.

I knew I wanted the series to be linked novels, so I could tell a different character’s story each time. Jolene isn’t in the first novel, but referenced a few times, and I found myself drawn to her.
