I stop writing. I take a break, do something else - sometimes it's exercise, or taking a walk with my dog, or doing legal work. If it needs longer than a few hours, I will read or listen to music. When I step away from my characters, they tend to come back to me when I least want them to.

Nine Years Gone came to me because of something I experienced. Through that experience, I started having discussions with others and learned of similar experiences and the idea took flight. The answer to this question is vague because I don't want to give away any spoilers

My life and my experiences give me ideas to write. Then I take those and combine them with my characters. I first tell the story in my head and once it's formed sufficiently enough to make sense, I start writing about it. I need to first visualize it before I can write it.

Since Nine Years Gone is with the proofreaders, I started writing my next novel. It's not yet titled but it will be set in Miami and will be another steamy contemporary romance

Just write. Get your idea down and once it's written, you can go back and edit, edit, edit. Someone gave me advice when I was starting out and it stuck. She said, think of writing like playing in a sandbox - your first draft is like throwing the sand into the sandbox. When your first draft is finished, then you get to go back and rake through the sand, to make it pretty and even. Finally, you'll start building sandcastles. Great analogy!
