I read (on topic, off topic — depends whether I need to work or rest), I enjoy the garden, I do housework — then I write whatever comes out and don’t fret over whether it is good or not. (Editing comes later.) The more you drink in, the more fuel for the imagination. The more you exercise your writing fingers, the more that fuel is used, the farther it will take you.

Hello. Thank you for the offer, but I’m not terribly well at the moment and the only Reviews I’m doing are of books I was going to read anyway. Great good luck with your book.

By writing. If I wait to be inspired I might never remember to write. Once I get rolling, whether that comes easily or not, I get drawn in and love the process.

Read the best writers you can find. Aim high in your own writing. Be honest. Be scrupulous. Have fun.

Immersing myself in the physicality and awe of places real and imagined, characters I may hate or love but whose nature I endeavour to plumb. Listening to the truth and falsehood of my own writing until it is as honest as I can make it.

Right now I am reading Nicola Griffith's wonderful novel Hild. She really brings 7th c. England to life, with all the richness of the natural and human world, replete with richness and risk.

The book evolved out of my desire to know Brigit well, and out of a need to turn to her in prayer and poetry at different points in my life.
As I continued to learn about her I found certain images or sequences from her tales or her folklore would grab me and fill me with the desire to write them, dive into them, and at times explore my own life through their lens.
Finally, when I realised I had enough poems to make a book, I thought about what else that book would need, what ideas and information I most wanted to share, and I got busy pulling those resources together, too.
