I just finished CAPTIVE IN THE UNDERWORLD and it was one of the best romances I've read in ages, like, seriously, absolutely fantastic. The emotional development of Persephone overcoming her mother's abuse and Hades's gradual softening were so well done. Are you going to be writing more books about the Greek gods? And if not, what are you doing next? I love your work!

Lianyu Tan Thank you so much Nenia, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I'm not planning any sequels at the moment, although if the Epic musical ever comes out in full maybe that will be enough to change my mind. I'm working on a secondary-world sapphic fantasy series that I can't wait to share, but I haven't set a date yet because it's still very much a work in progress. Would you say that in THE WICKED AND THE WILLING, vampirism is essentially an allegory for the predatory nature of colonialism?

Lianyu Tan Yes, absolutely! The hunger of conquest and of empire is a hunger that can never be satisfied, just like the vampire's bloodlust. There's a seduction and attraction to power that exists, leading people to betray their 'own kind' for personal gain, and it's easy to mythologize this power exchange.

Vampires in the tradition of Carmilla and Dracula have also invoked fear of the foreign other, the sensuous and demonic noble who corrupts the good pious English gentlewoman. So it was intriguing to use vampirism as a lens to look at othering and inhumanity with a twist on that classic frame.

will you be doing captive in the underworld 2 cos i think you should do a series where the titans return & hades & persephone has to make a choice that affect the world & the gods?

Lianyu Tan Right now I don't have any plans to write another book featuring Hades and Persephone, but that might change in the future.
