In my case, I've found that writer's block is usually my subconscious trying to sabotage me from writing and persuade me to do something else. It's usually because I'm getting bored or haven't fully flushed out the chapter I'm working on.
Switching to another part of the story usually brings things back in line.

You have absolute power.
Don't like a supporting character? Have them killed.
Though, sometimes your characters will surprise you. I never imagined in a million years that I'd be publishing a story about a tooth fairy. Even if she's a badass private eye.

I have 3 pieces of wisdom to share:
1) Nothing can be achieved without putting your butt in the seat and putting the (figurative) pen to paper. You'll have to sacrifice something to get there. For me, it was giving up a LOT of video game time.
2) The first novel is always the hardest. Mine took me 2½ years (mainly because I broke rule 3). A Tooth Fairy's Promise came out in 11 weeks.
3) DO NOT EDIT UNTIL YOU'RE DONE WITH THE 1ST DRAFT. Especially for your first novel. It will suck. It's supposed to. But by the time you get to your last chapter, your work will already have improved. There's no point in editing while you're still perfecting your craft.

While trying to peddle my previous manuscript to agents, I decided to work on a collection of short stories that reinvented popular myths. It was going to be my first experience in self-publishing.
Tooth and Nail was one such story that came out. I fell in love with my tooth fairy private eye and the rest was history.
