(view spoiler)[I had to see for myself if it was true, if the secret was still safe. Climbing to the top of the leaning tree trunk, the top gone eons ago, I looked into the hollowed depths and my gaze met the empty sockets that once held eyes of blue. (hide spoiler)]

Any fictional book world? Hmm, you've really made me think. Most of what I read takes place in real places. I love to travel and each place I visit holds a piece of my heart. I would have to say Prince Edward Island from the Anne of Green Gables series. I want to walk through the woods and along the beaches with Anne, ride through the apple blossoms on a buggy behind a trusted old steed, and browse along the streets of Avonlea.

Walk away! There were several times when I set The Witness Tree aside to work on something else when the writing wasn't productive. Coming back to it, I could get the new ideas down fast enough.

Don't give up. I know that sounds so cliché, but it's true. I've played at this writing thing a long time. In my office is a slip of paper with 'success is achieved by those who try...and keep trying.' The book I have just released, is not a book I could have written years ago. Life experience and a development of the craft can only mean your writing evolves along with you.

It is constant. I see something funny, I want to get it down. Same for anything heartbreaking - and let's face it, there's lots of that to work with - or soul stirring.

Many years ago, a story/rumor circulated through northern Wisconsin about remains found inside a hollow tree. The poor fellow inside had a leather outfit on reminiscent of a trapper/explorer. It was thought that he slipped inside the tree to evade Indians or a bear and couldn't get out. Well, it was all a hoax, but the story stuck with me, niggling me to write a story around it.

Anything my Elin Hilderbrand! I am also a fan of Sarah Addison Allen and Jeanette Walls.
