The idea for 'Lightning Bolt' started off with a spin on the typical serial killer novel. What if someone was going around stabbing people, but rather than wanting them killed, they wanted them to live? Why would they want to do this and how would they go about it?

I've always been a bit of a storyteller and always wanted to write a novel at some point. I met a colleague in 2011 who inspired me to give it a go and encouraged me throughout the writing process. It took around 18 months to write my debut 'Alive' but the feedback I got from those who read it was very positive and that inspired me to continue.

At present I am working on a novella which I would like to publish at some point to raise money for charity. I have an idea for another novel which I'll start work on once I'm finished and then into next year I aim to write and publish the fourth novel in the DI Joanne Christie series.

Write what you enjoy. Writing should be a pleasure, not a chore so enjoy the process. Create characters that are interesting to you and that you want spend time developing. Also, have one person that you trust to read your work in progress, that are happy to tell you when you are on the right track or when something needs some work.

When people take the time to read your stories or books and let you know what they thought about them. There is so much to choose from and it's getting harder for up and coming/indie writers to get noticed. Reading a book is a commitment, so anyone who takes the time to do so with mine is always special.

Try and have a rough idea where the story is going first of all, even if you deviate from it during the writing process (sometimes a better idea will come to you). I tend to focus on a scene at a time, so what do I want to say at this point? How will it fit into the bigger plot? What is the next scene and how will you get there? I think writer's block happens when you think to far ahead, so just focus on the current part and you'll get there.
