THE MONEY came to me while I was thinking about that old warning about how no good deed goes unpunished. At once, I saw a really good guy, a man- of-the-people lawyer I'd call Henry, who does a good deed that plummets him down a rabbit hole of violence, con games, and conspiracies, and almost ruins his life. Henry's story has been rewarded by favorable comparisons to James Patterson, Raymond Chandler, the movie Chinatown, and an especially good episode of Better Call Saul. That way, though I approach my writing day kicking, screaming, howling, and making an ever-expanding inventory of things that must be gotten to RIGHT NOW, the ritual takes over, and I sit and write.
