The characters start talking to me. Or more accurately, I see them talking to each other. Or fighting with each other. Or gossiping about each other.
It’s hard to not be able to drop everything and write right away when they do that.
But I’ve learned it’s not a good idea to leave the shopping on the floor to start writing. Not if there’s frozen veg in there. Or yoghurt.
