I'm not entirely sure. With Between Takes, Mona just appeared in my head almost fully formed. I'd just finished the second draft of Chasing Alys and was trying out a globetrotting chicklit idea that was not working when Mona's voice formed and the entirety of chapter two played out in my head. I learnt from Chasing Alys that when an idea strikes like that I need to react. Between Takes is the result of that.

Sometimes sprinting helps. Just setting a timer and sprinting with other people seems to knock something loose for me, but I'm a pantser so this really helps my plot discovery.
If that doesn't work, I get up and do something else. I once found a solution to a book ending while watering my vegetable garden.
And if that fails, well, I'm almost an insomniac thanks to my characters. Sods law, I get scenes and snippets of dialogue forming just as I got to bed.
