Greetings, and thank you: I am now blushing. :-) As you can perhaps imagine, it was fun to write. One woman has told me she has read the book four times (!) which still surprises me. Perhaps readers have fond the book appealing not only for the humor, but also as you noted: showing readers what a harsh environment can do to a person. Thank you. :-) David

If writers wish to be authors then the need to learn how the trade works. This means knowing how to format a book before the first draft is finished; know the genre you are writing in; know how to copy edit; know how to write a query letter for literary agents; knowing how to market your books; knowing the legalities involved; knowing what your book is worth. Writing well is merely the first step to success and an author.

The best thing about writing is that the writer gets to sit on her or his fat ass and daydream. Writers know how hard it is to then write about the daydream--- that is why writing is hard work.

When I do not feel like writing (i.e., brain has been put "on hold" and only very bad "Muzac" murmurs in my brain), I think about starving to death due to no income; this is an excellent motivator for writing.

Ringworld has a massive surface area and is hospitable for humans, as it was fabricated to be so. That means I may wander freely and never see another human, Pierson's Puppeteer, or Kzin. After about 200 years of doing that, I would spend the next 200 years conquering Ringworld, enslaving the tens of billions of inhabitants, and force them to buy and read my books.
