This book was intended as a sequel to the last one. I often find that if I keep a book brief enough, and if I don't grow too tired of the subject, writing a book naturally suggests the next topic. That's for nonfiction. For fiction I just have a wild imagination.

“Dad? Mom?” the child’s voice echoed outside the locked front door. It was 3:00 a.m.

It's a little odd, admittedly. I wake up around 3:00 a.m. every day and write for an hour. I then read for an hour. If you do this long enough you'll soon have a backlog of writing. The best way to get inspired is to read. Especially read about writing. Talk with anyone you know who also writes. Believe in yourself.

I don't have much of an evening life. I set my phone to "do not disturb" at 7:00 and see what happens from there.

Never give up. I work in publishing. I turn lots of projects down. Never give up. Often getting published is about being in the right place at the right time. The publishing world can be snobby and cliquish. It is almost impossible to break in. Don't let that stop you. Most of my fiction (written under a pen name) has been rejected multiple times before finding a publisher. Same is true of my nonfiction (listed on my page). Books two and three were turned down multiple times. Never give up. No effort put into writing is wasted.

Like most writers, I'm not a writer by profession. I have a regular job and make time to write on the side. The best thing about being a writer is that you've got everyone fooled. They may think you're a doctor, an editor, or a waitress, but really you know you're a writer. Work is just more fodder for your true profession, whether you get paid for it or not.

The best advice I can give is from Mr. Norman Milliken, my high school creative writing club advisor: write every day. Even if it's just 15 minutes, do it every day. Isaac Asimov, it is said, kept three typewriters queued up with the projects he was working on. He sat down at the one he felt like working on at the time. The modern day equivalent is to keep lots of files open on your computer. Even if you don't feel like it, write every day.
