My advice would be to write the genre(s) that you love to read or the genre(s) where plot ideas pop into your head at random times. If you're thinking about story ideas while you're on a walk or in the shower, then start to write! If you like the topic, then the passion will flow into your writing.
Also, don't worry about what close friends or family will think while they're reading your book! Don't be afraid to push the drama, love scene, action and gore, or whatever keeps the reader turning pages.
