"Up in the Old Hotel" by Joseph Mitchell is a book I intend to read slowly. Conveniently it is a series of short stories, so I can eke it out. Matthew G. Kirschenbaum's "Track Changes: a Literary History of Word Processing" is also on my list.

If you want to write, write! It has never been easier to get your work out there for others to read. Amazon KDP has made it simple. Lay out your story as briefly as you can, and then subdivide it into a framework you can flesh out. Then start. Little matters more than actually starting, apart from allocating writing time to make it a habit.

I seldom get stopped by writer's block. When I have difficulty focusing or laying down new material I don't fret about it, I just go into editing mode. I can always work on finessing earlier chapters and checking for typo, tasks I need to do anyway, until my focus returns. Otherwise I make a pot of tea and sit down with my guitar for twenty minutes.

I was invited to join an Indonesian sea kayaking expedition to Sumatra, to explore the biggest caldera lake in the world, lake Toba. The expedition was to focus on the culture of the Toba Batak living beside the lake. I had never heard of lake Toba, so I began researching, and the more I learned, the more intrigued I became. The volcanic rebound island in the lake known as the Heart of Toba was once home to 200 small kingdoms, often warring. Headhunting, cannibals, fortified villages, a culture of weaving, strong traditions and beliefs... I was hooked. I returned from Sumatra knowing I had to share the story.

The Heart of Toba is available pre-release with Amazon on Kindle, for release with paperback also on February 1st 2021, so that is still demanding my focus, but I am also working on a book about the first circumnavigation of Iceland by kayak. That was in 1977, when Iceland was hardly known as a tourist destination, and before the days of VHF radios and cellphones, social media, or even dry-suits. It is about the wonders of Iceland and its history through the eyes of a twenty-four-year-old on an adventure of a lifetime.
