Get yourself a good editor. It was so important to me that my self-published books were professionally edited and reviewed. I'm a bit of a grammar and punctuation nut anyway, so I had that part down, but a 2nd or even 3rd look at the structure of the story is worth a lot.

I was writing humorous children's "story" songs with lots of wordplay and performing them as the cartoon character CADi Grace (CAD being my initials and the "i" for inspiration....if that doesn't lead you to expanding your stories into children's books, I don't know what does. Now I write a song for every book. I've not yet gotten to a book for every song...but I'll get there.

I try to find silly topics. My friend Anthony was a guitarist with the Spin Doctors. We always call him Ant, and heck if his dream of being a rock star (he is!) didn't make me giggle when I thought of a real ant playing guitar...the rest is crazy minds at work.
