“Excited to answer questions about my book, The Yellow Cap. It's a combination biography of my late friend Jason Crump, part autobiography, and part Christian fantasy.”

Well, first, I haven't written long enough to trully deal with this! However, when I've had my many blocks what helps my writing is reading. I take a break from writing and find a good book that is well-written. I just finished the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was blown away with the fantastic descriptions and visual artistry of Tolkien.

Being able to tell a story and have folks tell you after reading it that it really impacted them is such a blessing!

Take courses on writing
Get into the discipline of writing a little bit each day. Take baby steps.
For myself, writing a sentence outline of my book idea helped me have the skeleton structure to keep going and have direction where I was going in my story. At the same time, be flexible to change the outline as you go.
Realize that every book is a collaboration. I've learned good story editors are key.

I'm writing my second book, I'm titling at this time, Pieces of the Puzzle. It's a story of a young man who is at a crisis of his faith due to tough circumstances and frustrations in his life. He meets an elderly black man in a nursing home where his grandmother resides in the Ozarks of southern Missouri, which is a challenge for him as he's never lived with many people at all of different races or cultural backgrounds. However, the two strike up a friendship and the older man, who turns out to be a retired Bible professor, shares the "pieces of the puzzle" of why he believes. It's basically an apologetic of the Christian faith told in a story form, but with the reality of the struggle in this broken world.

What I have learned in my short time writing is that it's more about perspiration than inspiration. If I wait for the big inspiring moment I tend to be very sporadic with my writing and allow the tyranny of the urgent to rule. However, if on my dayplanner I write each day, write 200 words--then I'm more apt to work on my craft. Inspiration is often a by-product of perspiration.

I've been considering the idea of this book for over 20 years. I've always wanted to be a writer since I was a kid, but life and other paths I sensed God taking me down kept writing in the background. However, this story about my Young Life friend Jason Crump kept percolating, and finally at the age of 56 I said to myself, "It's time!" :)
