I do a lot of research and musing over ideas before I start the outlining process. By the time the outline is finished, the characters have all found their place and the plot is essentially set, keeping in mind the outline is a guideline, not a blueprint. It can change as needed. Then during the crafting of prose, I am focused on the fun stuff, the writing, the emotion, not on underlying structure and plot.
